Nepali Mandala of the 5 elements, reproduction of the 16th century
Nepali Mandala of the 5 elements, reproduction of the 16th century
The geometric representation is part of the philosophy of the Five Elements, the basis of Hindu Ayurvedic medicine, which used it to explain the relationship between diseases and their treatments, and later integrated it into Tibetan medicine.
Any imbalance in our emotional and spiritual life is expressed in physical ailments. In the Mandala, there is a physical and cosmic correspondence of the human being and spirituality; it is the dimension in which the microcosm and macrocosm meet. It was used to explain and detect the relationship between diseases and their treatments through various diagnoses; the fundamental causes of our imbalances are discovered and then addressed through natural healing processes.
The 5 Elements are characterized by their shapes and colors:
WATER: circle - white - liquids the water element transforms anger and aggression
EARTH: square - yellow - a feeling of heaviness and lightness the earth element transforms pride and selfishness
FIRE: triangle - red - temperature the fire element transforms passion and desire
AIR: crescent moon - green - movement the air element transforms envy and jealousy
SPACE: sesame seed shape (drop) - blue - thoughts and mind the space element transforms ignorance and stupidity
In Mandalas, the elements can be represented by their own geometric shape or their respective color.
Symbolic Elements
1st triangle pointing downward represents the vagina, birth, creation, life, EMBRYO
The next 2 triangles:
SHIVA/masculine= Father's Genes/consciousness
SHAKTI/feminine= Mother's Genes/activation
The union of Shiva and Shakti represents cosmic duality, which symbolizes divine unity and the creation of the universe.
8 petals= internal winds, the central SHUSHUMNA channel 16 inner petals=bones
16 outer petals=muscles, skin, blood
The Lotus petals are related to different energy centers in the human body.
The two white squares that create an 8-pointed star represent the physical body of Man/Woman, and white is the water element of which we are mostly composed.
The fine lines with white dots around the two squares represent the NADIS.
The white dots with a black background between the petals represent the NERVOUS SYSTEM.
The shape of the crescent moon in Ayurvedic medicine is associated with feminine energy, the mind, emotions, and tranquility; it represents a balance between opposing energies, similar to the union of Shiva and Shakti. It symbolizes harmony between the mind and body.
The Mandala, which is the expression of the 5 elements, symbolizes the creation of the universe and, therefore, that of a human being.
